about
This song is based on a prose poem written by a dear friend of mine. I took it, tweaked it, and wrote the entire thing for a one-handed accompaniment because I had a broken thumb at the time. I later expanded the arrangement, and this song remains one of the most popular I've ever written or performed. It was performed publicly for the first time at the Scottsville Rotary club, and a week later at the Scottsville Veteran Memorial service.
lyrics
My feet resound on to the stoney street
Rain begins to pour down my face
I can't seem to cry again
The sky weeps with me
A mournful lullabye I can hear
Familiar as the sun and the moon
The voice of one calling, suddenly stilled
Silence, and no more
Cry, cry for the death of your friends
Cry for the end of the world
Cry, cry, until no tears will come
And the sky weeps for you
Freshwater tears
Voices chatter, I hear them now
All around me something is calling
The endless night is ever ahead
Rain drips down my face
Tears of sorrow and tears of pain
Tears of grief and tears of rage
My knife slipped and fell from my hand
I couldn't take his life
Cry, cry, for the life that was spared
Cry for the death of your brother
Cry, cry, until no tears will come
And the sky weeps for you
Freshwater tears
The killer runs down an empty street
The stranger who had once been my friend
I turned and fell on the rainsoaked pavement
And tried to take it all in
Blood and pain and endless grief
Replaces my anger at what has been done there
Everything I'd believed or known
Suddenly empty and worthless
Cry, cry for the world is unjust
Cry for the life of a killer
Cry, cry until no tears will come
And the sky weeps for you
Freshwater tears
My feet resound on to the stoney street
Rain begins to pour down my face
I can't seem to cry again
The sky weeps with me
